This is somewhat unreal.

I was disc golfing down in Roanoke with a friend I hadn't seen in over a couple years, last weekend (the latest member of the forum actually, Jeff Knoedler). And he told me that the writer DF Lewis (over in England) had put the cover of our premier issue of Gothic Light up on a website.

Jeff & I published a magazine in the early 90s, with the premier issue coming out about the time that Jesse Esquivel was born (1991). So that was really strange to come up all of the sudden.

As reference, DF Lewis has had over 1,500 stories published. He's got a cult following on both sides of the ocean. He's one of my favorite writers. As good as HP Lovecraft, Lord Dunsany, and Tolkien (and I've read most everything by and about Tolkien). He's also better than Stephen King or Clive Barker, in my opinion. Both of who I like, especially Clive Barker's Books Of Blood, Imagica, The Thief Of Always, etc..

So anyway, I googled the info and found that it's on the header of his website.

{old link}

I need a drink. That is just too cool for words (...if you're in my head. If you're not in my head, it's probably just a long and boring story.)

P.S. This Fox Valley website was designed in the same way we designed Gothic Light. With the words & images being equal in the crafting of the design.

Stephen King is my all time fiction man. Kind of unreal when he got hit by that car in real life and ended up re-living the book he wrote years before! Some of his movies flopped but most of them were awesome. :zombie: mummy lightning

And he's a natural writer too. It's been solid work through the 70s, 80s, 90s, and this decade. Very fluid; he doesn't a have to force dialogue or come up with weird settings just to do it.

This is absolutely true: I used to go jogging down Downer in Aurora, with the traffic ("like you should"). After Stephen King got hit (and since), if I'm jogging in the street, I always jog against the traffic, so I see who's coming at me. Just because of what happened with Stephen King.

It's a slower posting day, so I hope you don't mind.

A friend sent me a link with this quote from DF Lewis on the British horror website Vault Of Evil. They were talking about the Golden Age of the Small Press/Independent Press.

"All the 'Gothic Light' issues I have were certainly a significant highlight of the Small Press scene in the early nineties. One of my all-time favourites. All covers were printed on see through material (perspex?)."

If you have any interests outside of disc golf that you want to post about (a band, poker games, writing clubs, Hendrix collecting, etc) feel free to post it here. That's what it's here for.

The players who play the game, are as important as the game itself.   pirate

First, I came back to this thread to add this new post. And saw it now has 623 views. Way too many to be from disc golfers. So first, if anyone else from the Gothic Light days found this post from a search engine, my email address is AbeArenas@gmail.com

Send me a message. Let me know what you're up to.

And now for the post...I was in a book store and found this in one of the boxes (up in the attic/loft). It was published in 1993 in England. I think I bought the American edition about a decade ago. But I don't remember my quote being in that American edition.

The second paragraph, where it cites the "the acclaimed Gothic Light journal" ... that was our magazine. I listed DF Lewis as one of my favorite writers (...in our guidelines, for horror & fantasy writers submitting their work).

But the funny thing is that they put my reference ahead of bigtime professional writers like Ramsey Campbell and Karl Edward Wagner. not worthy Nice.
