Fox Valley Metro Disc Golf Club 2008 Leagues
As we set the schedule for our 2008 disc golf leagues, we'd like some feedback and suggestions for the structure we use for this year's weeknight leagues. We will continue to host leagues at Aurora's Jericho Lake course and Oswego's Eagle Ridge course. The spring league will most likely be the same format as we used last spring.
This thread is only for discussion purposes. All points are up for debate. We as a club can decide what to do at our next meeting. Once the schedules and formats are established, they will be posted on the web site and at each course.
#1 One or Two Nights per Week. Last year we held leagues two nights per week. Attendance was occasionally light, possibly because people were too busy with other things to attend leagues twice a week. There are other area leagues planned for weeknights this year, most notably Streamwood on Tuesdays and Joliet on Wednesdays, so there are other options for people who want to play leagues more frequently than once per week.
Monday is probably the best day of the week for us to host leagues, and if we go down to one night per week, that will be the only night we do it.
#2 Doubles or Singles? Last year's summer league had a doubles format one night and a singles format one night. If we move to only one night per week, we would probably have either all doubles or alternating doubles & singles.
Doubles: Random draw has been the format we have used. We might be able to attract more new players if we have either -two pools, all "upper" players pairing up in one pool of teams, all "lower" players pairing up in another pool of teams, or -a high-low where the one partner comes from an upper group and one partner comes from a lower group
Singles: How many divisions to we want for a singles league? Last year, we had one upper and one lower. Adding a third "novice"-like division could possibly attract more new players. Also, Aaron has talked about assigning participants a handicap in a singles league, which would equalize all participants somewhat.
#3 Entry fees Our entry fees have typically been $5 per participant for doubles plus a $1 optional ace pot, that should probably stay the same, regardless of what doubles format we use. For singles, we could have higher entry fees for the higher divisions, for example, $3 for novice, $5 for "lower", & $10 for upper.
We could also increase our fees $1 or so, putting all those funds into the club treasury.
#4 CTP's The singles league had optional weekly CTP's, one or two bucks on top of your entry fee and you only won them if you got in. Any CTP ideas are welcome.
Feel free to respond to this post with any ideas, comments, questions, or suggestions.

#1 To be truthful, I think realistically that one league should be enough for the club. Monday seemed to work great last year with the glow dubs in Streamwood.
#2 Even though I think having a singles league helps people improve their overall and tournament play, I vote for a doubles league this year. With having our regularly scheduled tag challenges and casual rounds of singles for tags, I think there is enough singles rounds available for all of our club members. Not to mention 200 million tourneys in our area this year.
If we did run singles, and I went with the handicapping system, there are a few things people need to be aware of. First, there would only be one division. 2nd it takes 3 weeks to generate a handicap. Anyone who shows up in the middle of the year for the 1st time will have to shoot extremely well for those first 2 weeks in order to "cash". 3rd the handicap is based on performance the best 3 of last 5 weeks you have played.
I think an upper and lower division system would work best. Get the new guys out playing with someone who can help their game and give a bit of advice. If the pools are seperate, I would like to see the novice players on a card with the upper pool players as well so they can watch and learn a bit rather than the blind leading the blind type of thing. I think, however, that most of the players in our club would be considered either in the upper or on the cusp of playing in the upper division. I think that if there is a disproportionate number of players in each pool, that the players with the lowest rating be moved down or highest rating be moved up accordingly. Points would be given in the division for which they entered.
#3I agree with the lower entry for the lower division. This would not be possible if we have mixed division doubles unless we prorate the payouts. If we go with a singles league, I am definately all for it. Maybe even making the novice groups free or only a dollar (incentive to get better and move up where the cash is.)
#4CTP's work great to help pay for the end of the year party and trophies. I strongly suggest we make them available. As a suggestion, if anyone has extra plastic they want to get rid of, add it on for a cheap or free CTP for thenovice players. It adds incentive for the new guys/ girls to come back even if they are not in the cash.
Another idea, maybe once a month, if we get new players showing up regularly, have a 15-20 clinic on specific shots. One week show a backhand, another week work on the flick, and do on. This can be done right before league starts or immedialtely afterwards.

I think that's a good idea Aaron. Teaching the game may bring more players, plus that system should even out the playing field.

Once per month we'll update the schedule, adding 4 or 5 more weeks.
Leagues will start at 5:30PM sharp, doubles format on Mondays, singles format one Thursday per month. There will be an upper and lower division. $10 for upper division and $5 for lower. If less than 12 people show up it will be one division with $5 entry fee. Optional $1 ace fund, and a $2 50/50 CTP.
